Introduction: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common pregnancy complication associated with increased maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Self-care behaviors are essential for effective diabetes management, while health literacy is a key factor in health outcomes. This study explores the relationship between health literacy and self-care behaviors in women with gestational diabetes.
Methods: This descriptive-analytical study included 125 pregnant women with GDM from selected public hospitals in Karaj between November and February 2022. Data were collected via self-administered questionnaires assessing health literacy and self-care behaviors. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 26, with descriptive and inferential tests. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Alborz University of Medical Sciences (IR.ABZUMS.REC.1401.134).
Results: Participants had a mean health literacy score of 82.80 ± 12.30 (sufficient level) and a mean self-care score of 5.07 ± 0.79 (strong category). A significant positive correlation was found between health literacy and self-care behaviors.
Conclusion: The positive association between health literacy and self-care behaviors in women with GDM highlights the importance of health literacy education to improve self-care practices, diabetes management, and reduce pregnancy complications.
