Objectives: Generalized epilepsy is a chronic disorder characterized by recurrent seizure which can increase the content of reactive oxygen species and super oxide generation in the brain. The aim of the present study was to estimate not only the plasma level of MDA (as marker of oxidative stress) in patient with epilepsy , but also to compare the t level in two study group Methods and Materials: Hundred and twenty patients from those referred to neurology departments with age limitation of 20-40 years(as the case group) and three hundred thirteen normal subjects aged between 20-40 years referred to Blood Donation Organization (as the control group) were involved in the study. Plasma level of MDA of the above mentioned two study group , were determined by spectrophotometric assay. Results: The analysis of the plasma from epileptics revealed: increased MDA level in comparison of control persons and these differences were statistically significant. The mean value of MDA in case group was 1.46 nmol / ml and in control one was 1.02 nmol/ml that was statistically significant (p=0.001). Conclusion: Our results indicate on the oxidant elevation and oxidative disturbances in epileptic patients, which can play an important role in the pathophysiology of epilepsy. Suggestion: We suggest that further studies should be done on the role of oxidative stress in patients and its balance with anti-oxidant of epilepsy.
