Introduction: Addicts and recovering addicts are vulnerable groups in society.In this group of people, risky sexual behaviors and drug use are predisposing factors for genital infections.The present study aimed to determine student-centered educational intervention to improve sexual health awareness and attitudes among those recovering from drug use in Karaj city.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in the second half of 2024on all recoveries from public and private addiction treatment centers in Karaj who had been sober for at least one month (54 people). Data were collected using two questionnaires on high-risk sexual behaviors by Zarei, Khakbaz, and Karami, a researcher-made questionnaire on “Knowledge and Attitudes about High-Risk Behaviors,” and a demographic profile checklist. During three 2-hour sessions, sexual health and hygiene education was provided to individuals in groups using a lecture and question-and-answer method. The questionnaires were given to individuals to complete before and immediately after the intervention. The data were analyzed using SPSS software and statistical tests Sciences. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Alborz University of Medical Sciences IR.ABZUMS.REC.1403.289). All participants provided informed consent to participate in the study. The Helsinki Declaration rules were followed during research.
Results:In the present study, 53.7% of the recovering addicts in the study were male, and the majority of them used heroin (33.3%) and crystal meth (31.5%), respectively. In terms of high-risk sexual behaviors,70% of men and 16% of women had high-risk sexual behaviors. According tothe results of the study, the difference in the average score of knowledge-attitude about high-risk sexual behaviors in the two groups before and after the intervention was 11.11±6.9 and was significant (p<0.001).
Conclusion: In the present study, educational intervention by students led to a significant increase in awareness and attitude towards risky sexual behaviors in the trained group. This finding suggests that structured educational programs can be effective in changing the attitude and improving the knowledge of recovering individuals
